Before leaving you to make your decision about Isla Mujeres resorts, I would like to take a moment to address the most common questions and hopefully clear up any doubts you may have about Isla Mujeres.
Is it worth staying in Isla Mujeres?
It depends on what you are looking for on a vacation in Mexico. It’s definitely worth visiting, and you may want to stay a few days if you love the tranquillity of the island vibes, watch amazing sunsets and sunrises, enjoy some of the best snorkeling in Mexico, swim in pristine turquoise waters, and enjoy all the other amazing things to do in Isla Mujeres.

Which side of Isla Mujeres is better?
They are both amazing. The northwestern side has spectacular white sand beaches and the best spot to bask in the sun, have some delicious meals in one of the beachfront restaurants, or enjoy incredible sunsets.
The oceanside has fascinating landscapes to admire and great sunrises, while the southern point has a beautiful park to visit and an excellent spot for pictures.
What is special about Isla Mujeres? And what is Isla Mujeres known for?
It’s history, first of all, is kind of interesting. Its name was given by the Spanish conquerors when they saw women-shaped figurines on the beach upon their arrival on the island.
It seems that the island was a sanctuary where the Mayans would go to leave their offerings to the fertility goddess Ixchel.
In fact, from the south point, you can still admire her statue, which honors the past.
However, that is not all. Isla Mujeres is also special for its spectacular sunsets and for being part of the whale sharks’ migration route.
Swimming with whale sharks is one of the most recommended tours from Cancun that includes a stop by the spectacular beach in Isla Mujeres.

Are there cars on Isla Mujeres?
Yes, there are cars, and you can also bring yours, although it’s not really worth it, nor recommended. If you want to, though, you must leave from the Punta Sam Ferry terminal. In this post on how to get to Isla Mujeres, I tell you all about it.
But to move around in Isla Mujeres, the best way is to rent a golf cart! So much fun and eco-friendly.
How long is the ferry ride from Cancun to Isla Mujeres?
The ferry ride is only 20 minutes, and you can catch the ferry from different marinas in Cancun.
What is better, Isla Mujeres or Tulum?
That’s a tough question because those are two completely different destinations, although they are both on some of the best beaches in Mexico, and they offer an incredible “sand&sea” vacation.
Let’s say in a few words that Isla Mujeres has a more laid-back, tranquil vibe, is smaller and less chaotic than Tulum, but, at the same time, has fewer options in terms of food and entertainment, hotel offers, and things to see around it.
If you had to choose, I would spend a couple of nights in Isla Mujeres and the rest in Tulum.

How long does it take to drive around Isla Mujeres?
As you can see from the picture below, Isla Mujeres’ length is only 7.6 km. Driving around the island either by golf cart or car takes from 40 minutes to 7 hours, depending on how many stops you are going to make 🙂

Is Isla Mujeres safe?
Yes, Isla Mujeres is one of the safest places to stay in Mexico, but as I always say, you should still be aware of your surroundings and use some common sense. The fact that you feel you are in paradise doesn’t make it a real paradise, and we are still on this earth with all its usual dangers and issues.
