Is February a Good Time to Visit Mexico?

Absolutely! February is a fantastic time to visit Mexico for many reasons; here are the top ones.

First off, the weather across the country is near perfect. Most regions experience warm and sunny days with comfortable temperatures.

February is also part of the dry season, so rain is minimal across most of Mexico. This makes it great for outdoor activities, whether you’re exploring ancient Mayan ruins, hiking in the mountains, or just relaxing by the beach​.

The Yucatan Peninsula, Baja California, and the Pacific coast offer your dream weather with very low rain chances.

Lastly, there are some exciting events and festivals throughout the month. The most notable one is Carnaval, which is a vibrant and lively celebration that happens in various cities across Mexico.

In February, Mexico offers a delightful array of climates. For instance, in the central highlands, including Mexico City, daytime temperatures hover around a pleasant 75°F (24°C), while nights can be cooler, dropping to about 47°F (8°C)​.

Coastal regions, particularly along the Yucatán Peninsula, offer some of the best beach weather. Areas like Cancún and the Riviera Maya see daytime highs around 84°F (29°C) and nighttime lows of 73°F (23°C).

However, Mexico also has its share of cooler climates, especially in the higher altitudes. For example, areas like Nevado de Toluca can be quite chilly, with daytime temperatures often around 46°F (8°C) and nighttime temperatures dropping below freezing. 

This contrast ensures that you can experience everything from a wintery atmosphere to warm, sun-drenched beaches in Mexico during February.

Average rainfall in Mexico in February

Rainfall in Mexico varies in February, but it’s generally quite low. Coastal areas, like those on the Yucatán Peninsula, see moderate rain, with an average of about 44 mm.

Central regions, including major cities, typically experience very little rain, averaging around 5 mm. 

On the Pacific Coast, rainfall is similarly low, with places like Puerto Vallarta and Cabo San Lucas receiving about 6-12 mm.

All in all, the conditions are perfect for exploring without much concern for wet weather​. Even if rainfall does occur, it usually clears up within 15-30 minutes.

Is February hurricane season in Mexico?

The hurricane season in Mexico officially runs from June 1 to November 30. This means you can enjoy a February vacation in Mexico without worrying about the threat of hurricanes.

Compared to coastal regions, Mexico City sees slightly colder (but still pleasant) temperatures in February. During the day, temperatures typically range from 70°F to 75°F (21°C to 24°C), while at night, they can drop to around 41°F to 47°F (5°C to 8°C).

There’s very little rainfall in February, with an average of just one day of rain and around 4mm of precipitation in the entire month​. Expect around 7.4 hours of daylight a day.

  • Celebrate Candlemas: Also known as Día de la Candelaria, this religious holiday involves the blessing of candles and figurines of the Christ child. Tamales are very popular on this day, so make sure to indulge yourself.
  • Visit Chapultepec Park: February’s weather is perfect for taking a hike in the Chapultepec Park. You can also visit the Chapultepec Castle, which offers stunning views of the city.

The weather is lovely with warm days and cool evenings. Average daytime temperatures are around 82°F (28°C), with highs reaching up to 84°F (29°C) and lows dropping to around 70°F (21°C). Rainfall is also very minimal, with only about 2 rainy days in the whole month.

  • Experience Carnaval: Cancun has one of the most vibrant Carnaval celebrations in the country. It’s a week-long festival featuring parades, concerts, and parties. 
  • Celebrate Valentine’s Day: Looking to celebrate love in a beautiful setting? Many restaurants, hotels, and tour providers provide special packages and dinners for couples.
  • Take Advantage of the City’s Beaches: Enjoy the beautiful beaches like Playa Delfines and Playa Norte. The weather is perfect for lounging on the sand, swimming, or partaking in water sports like jet skiing and paddleboarding​.

Yes, February is an excellent time to visit Cancun. Not only is the weather perfect for outdoor activities and beach time, but several cultural events, such as Carnaval, make this month lively and fun​.

Does it rain a lot in Cancun in February?

Not at all! February is part of Cancun’s dry season. There’s minimal rainfall, averaging about five rainy days throughout the month. 

Rain showers, even when they do occur, are typically brief and will pass within minutes​. There won’t be any disruption to your plans.

Do hurricanes hit Cancun in February?

Hurricanes are very unlikely to hit Cancun in February. The hurricane season in the Caribbean typically runs from June to November. February falls well outside of this period, making it one of the safest months to visit Cancun. 

What are the best and worst months to visit Cancun?

The best months to visit Cancun are from December to April, when the weather is most pleasant with warm temperatures and minimal rain. However, this is also the peak tourist season, so expect higher prices and more crowds.

The worst months to visit are from June to November, during the hurricane season. This period sees more rain and higher humidity, which can impact travel plans.

3. Playa del Carmen

The weather in Playa del Carmen during February is pretty much perfect. During the day, temperatures usually hover around 82°F (28°C), warm enough for the beach but not too hot to explore. Nights are comfortably cool, around 73°F (23°C).

You won’t have to worry much about rain either, as February sees minimal rainfall, only about 29mm. Plus, you’ll enjoy plenty of sunshine, with about 8.4 hours of sunlight each day.

  • Lounge at the Beach Clubs: Head over to one of the chic beach clubs like Mamitas Beach Club. The weather is perfect for lounging by the sea, sipping on cocktails, and maybe even catching some live DJ sets.

February in Tulum is pretty much perfect. Daytime temperatures average around 84°F (29°C) and can go up to 86°F (30°C), while nighttime temperatures are typically around 70°F (21°C) to 73°F (23°C). 

It’s warm enough for the beach but not too hot to explore the ruins and other outdoor activities. 

Rainfall averages about 37 mm, spread over five days in the month. You don’t have to worry about having to cancel/reschedule any plans due to rain.

5. Cozumel

The sea temperature remains inviting at approximately 79°F (26°C), ideal for swimming and water activities. 

It is also one of the drier months, with minimal rainfall averaging 45.7 mm over about six days

INSIDER TIP: You can book all those tours with beach vendors. Make sure they have their own shack on the beach.

9. Cabo San Lucas
