How to Visit Paamul Beach, Riviera Maya Mexico – The Complete Guide
Tired of searching for a seaweed-free beach in the Riviera Maya? Meet Paamul Beach, a quiet, laid-back slice of paradise where the sargassum rarely shows up.
Just a short drive from Playa del Carmen, this hidden gem is loved by locals, divers, and anyone craving clear turquoise water without the crowds (or the stinky seaweed).
It’s not flashy, but that’s the charm. Here’s exactly how to visit, what to bring, and why Paamul might become your new favorite spot on the coast.

A Quiet Escape on the Riviera Maya
You might be surprised to learn that it’s still possible to find lesser-known beaches in the Riviera Maya that haven’t been overrun by tourism. When I returned to Paamul for the second time, I was shocked, in the best way, to find the place almost empty, just me and a few other travelers soaking up the calm and quiet.
With its mix of white sand and limestone rocks (don’t worry, they don’t interfere with swimming), calm turquoise water, and a tranquil bay perfect for strolling, Paamul offers something rare: peace. In my opinion, it’s even better than Xpu-Ha, definitely now that Xpu-Ha is overrun by Sargasso weed.
Paamul at a Glance
Located just 20 km from Playa del Carmen and 40 km from Tulum, Paamul is both a beach and a residential area, originally discovered and settled by expats living in motorhomes. Over the years, more homes have popped up, but the relaxed vibe remains.
From the main road (Carretera Federal), you’ll spot a mix of quirky homes—some still with RVs parked out front. And if you’re dreaming of buying property on the beach, this area might be worth a look.
Is Paamul Beach Still Free to Access?
Not anymore. Things have changed.
Paamul used to be one of those places where you could just walk in, lay your towel down, and enjoy the day. But now, to access the beach, there’s a minimum fee of 500 MXN per person, which you can use toward food and drinks at the restaurant. If you want a beach bed and shade, that’s another 500 MXN.
Even if you don’t rent a bed, you’ll still need to pay the base fee. It’s not ideal, but Paamul still feels worth it for how quiet and pristine it is, especially compared to other Riviera Maya beaches.
You can park behind the restaurant and hotel, which is located right after the security bar at the entrance. You will need to show your ID to the security guard, and he will direct you to the parking area.
Where to Stay: The Paamul Hotel
On the right side of the beach, you’ll find the Paamul Hotel, a small, boutique property that’s all about location and chill vibes. It’s no longer cheap (I recall when it was $60 per night—those days are long gone), but it’s still worth it for the peace, views, and access.
The hotel is simple, clean, and decorated with care. If you want to stay overnight, especially to catch the sunrise or enjoy a quiet evening under the stars, this is the place.
📌 Tip: Check current rates and availability ahead of time if you’re planning to stay overnight.
What About the Sargasso Situation?
If you’re worried about sargassum seaweed, I’ve got some good news. I visited Paamul again on July 15th, right in the middle of peak seaweed season. Although the beach in front of the hotel had some buildup, workers were actively cleaning it.
But here’s the secret: just a few steps to the left of the restaurant, the water was crystal clear, and there was no seaweed at all. It looked like a giant natural swimming pool.
Of course, things can change with the wind, but this spot is usually in much better shape than other nearby beaches.

Things to Do in Paamul Beach
Sure, you could lie in the sun all day and just relax—and honestly, you should. But if you’re like me and get restless, here are a few fun activities to try:
🐟 Snorkeling
Bring your own snorkel gear and explore the left side of the bay, where the limestone rocks are. You might spot coral fish, sea turtles, or other marine life. There’s a dive shop if you need to rent equipment, but having your own is always best.
🤿 Take a Dive Trip
The dive shop, located behind the restaurant, offers dive excursions to nearby reefs. I haven’t tried it yet, but it could be a great way to explore the underwater world.
🛶 Kayak or Paddleboard
Rent a kayak or paddleboard from the same dive shop and enjoy a bit of exercise while exploring the bay. It’s a fun, active way to enjoy the scenery and work on your tan at the same time.
🌅 Spend the Weekend
If your schedule and budget allow, staying overnight is the best way to enjoy Paamul. Quiet evenings, stunning sunsets, and the sound of the ocean all to yourself—what more could you want?

How to Get to Paamul Beach
🚗 By Car
This is hands down the easiest and most flexible way to reach Paamul. From Playa del Carmen, head south on the Carretera Federal (307), from Tulum, head north. Look for the clearly marked Paamul sign on the highway.

Once you turn, it’s about a 5-minute drive to the beach area. You can park near the restaurant and hotel.

In a rush? Here is the best Car rental searching platform
When it comes to renting a car in Mexico, I always recommend the Discover Cars platform, where you can compare prices among different car rentals and then decide which one is best for you.
🚐 By Colectivo (Shared Minivan)
Colectivos run every 5 minutes between Playa and Tulum. Ask the driver to drop you at Paamul. Just note: you’ll be dropped off on the main road, and you’ll need to walk around half a mile to reach the beach. Totally doable, just be ready for the heat.
🚕 By Taxi
You can take a taxi, but I don’t recommend it unless necessary. If you go this route, agree on the price before the ride, get the driver’s contact info, and arrange your return. Ask your hotel to recommend someone reliable—and don’t pay in advance.

Final Thoughts on Paamul
Paamul isn’t flashy, and it’s not free anymore, but it’s still one of the most peaceful, relaxing beaches in the Riviera Maya. It offers a little slice of tranquility when other beaches feel overcrowded or affected by seaweed.
Whether you go for the day or treat yourself to a weekend at the Paamul Hotel, this beach is worth having on your radar—just don’t spread the word too much. Let’s keep it our little secret. 😉
