11 Amazing Things to Do in Todos Santos Baja California Sur, Mexico: The Guide You Didn’t Know You Needed

Tucked between the Pacific Ocean and the Sierra de la Laguna mountains, Todos Santos is one of the most unique and pretty towns in Baja California Sur. Recognized as a Pueblo Mágico, it’s known for its colorful streets, surf-friendly beaches, creative community, and peaceful desert surroundings.

I’ve been stopping in Todos Santos every time I travel across Baja and there’s always something new to discover, from the ever-evolving local art scene to hidden beaches and off-the-map trails like the Punta Lobos hike.

Days here are best spent gallery hopping, lounging at Playa Punta Lobos, eating your way through the farm-to-table restaurants, and catching waves at Cerritos Beach.

In this essential guide to things to do in Todos Santos, you will find practical tips on what to do, where to stay, the best eateries, and how to plan your trip to make your stay more enjoyable.

Todos Santos At a Glance

It’s actually becoming a valid competitor to the now-saturated and insanely over-priced Tulum.

The colonial architecture, cobblestone streets, elegant shops, art galleries, gourmet restaurants, organic farms, and unforgettable sunsets altogether make this town so special.

The tiny historical center is surrounded by lush tropical vegetation, contrasting with the dry desert just a few miles away.

The reason for such a difference in the territory is the Sierra de la Laguna mountain range, which receives sufficient rainfall to not only sustain the rich vegetable gardens and organic farms but also support the flourishing of mangoes, papayas, and palm trees throughout the entire area.

THINGS TO DO IN TODOS SANTOS MEXICO
On the beach in Todos Santos – close to The Hotelito – one of my favorite hotels in Todos Santos

Many reasons have drawn a small stream of travelers to Todos Santos for ages: they come to ride the ocean waves, being the best surfing spots in Baja California, or are moved by the false myth of the Hotel California, which is not the one mentioned in the famous evergreen song by the Eagles. I’m sorry that I’m disappointing you right now.

Others come to get away from the hustle and bustle of the routine to get pampered in the fancy hotels built over the red brick walls of the old colonial mansions, admire the stunning bright sunsets on the deserted beaches, and dine in the latest gourmet restaurant in town.

I will tell you more about those in the next chapter. If you are in Baja California, this is definitely a destination you should visit.

It’s actually the prettiest town among the ones I have visited on the peninsula, together with Loreto.

Best things to do in Todos Santos Baja California

1. Surfing in Todos Santos

Among all Todos Santos activities, Surfing is definitely the most popular. As I was mentioning before, this is the mecca for surf lovers who gather mostly on two beaches at El Pescadero, a small town 6 miles from Todos Santos.

Playa Los Cerritos is the most popular, and there you can rent surfboards or even take surf classes for about 25 USD per hour, but I am sure you can make a deal 🙂

Playa San Pedrito, also in the same area, is another good spot for surfing and has facilities for camping as well. There is a small bar and restaurant.

2. Hiking in Todos Santos – Mexico

If you are wondering what to do in Todos Santos for the outdoorsy besides surfing, hiking is another excellent option.

They are around the Sierra de la Laguna Mountains and up to the cliffs and coves in Punta Lobos. Unfortunately, I am not familiar with all the hikes. I haven’t found any organized tours or private guides to take you, but I did go on a hike in Punta Lobos with some new friends I made.

➡️ Punta Lobos Hike – A Must-Do Coastal Trail in Todos Santos

Just minutes from downtown Todos Santos, the Punta Lobos hike offers a stunning mix of ocean views, desert cliffs, and local history.

The moderate trail winds above Playa Punta Lobos, past whale watching lookouts and the weathered ruins of an old sugar port. It’s the perfect half-day adventure for nature lovers and photographers.

👉 Read the full guide to hiking Punta Lobos in Todos Santos for trail details, tips, and how to get there.

3. Go birdwatching in Todos Santos, Mexico

Todos Santos has a unique tropical setting, situated between the desert and the ocean, which is home to over 150 bird species.

A paradise for nature lovers and bird watchers. On this tour, you’ll start early in the morning, when bird activity is at its most lively. A naturalist guide will take you along a strategic path around Todos Santos through deserts and saltwater marshes where the majority of birds live.

Ask your hotel reception or Airbnb owner about private guides in Todos Santos.

4. Go on a horseback riding adventure

One of the most peaceful ways to experience Todos Santos is on horseback. Guided horseback riding tours take you along Playa Las Palmas, through desert trails, and even up toward the cliffs near Punta Lobos.

Rides can be tailored for all levels, from first-timers to experienced riders, and many are timed for sunset, when the light turns golden and the beach is practically empty.

Most tours are run by local ranchers who know the terrain well and can share stories about the landscape and wildlife. It’s a perfect mix of slow travel and adventure, with views you’ll never forget.

6. Enjoy the good life in Todos Santos, Mexico

Choose one of the high-end hotels suggested below and let them pamper you with exceptional services, massage therapies, and gourmet cuisine. The funky town also offers a good number of fine dining restaurants, which I will discuss in the next section.

7. Explore the Art and Culture of Todos Santos with a Local Artist

Go beyond the gallery walls on this cultural tour led by a Todos Santos artist with over 12 years of experience.

Learn about unique mixed-media techniques using local materials, meet some of the town’s most influential contemporary artists, and get insider access to cultural events that most visitors miss.

With deep local connections and a passion for community, your guide offers a rare, behind-the-scenes look at the creative soul of this Pueblo Mágico.

8. Shopping

Paintings displayed on patterned floor near large windows and plants in modern indoor setting. Vibrant artwork featuring lively scenes and figures.

Todos Santos has been steadily growing over the years, and while some locals might feel it’s becoming a bit too popular, that energy brings an exciting wave of new creativity. You’ll find stylish boutiques, contemporary art galleries, and thoughtful farm-to-table restaurants popping up all over town. The growth has added depth, not erased the charm.

Take a slow walk through the historical center, where old brick-stone houses line narrow streets, softened by bougainvillea and Baja sun. It still feels quiet, especially in the mornings. Stop at one of the small cafés — Doce Cuarenta is a local favorite for strong coffee and people-watching — or grab a fresh smoothie at Café La Esquina.

A person with a backpack walks near Hotel California, a building with archways and palm trees lining the street on a sunny day.

The shopping scene is one of the town’s biggest surprises. You won’t find rows of mass-produced souvenirs here. Instead, wander into Oysteria, a beautiful building with an Oyster restaurant surrounded by spectacular art galleries and beautiful clothing shops filled with curated artisan pieces, jewelry, and handmade home goods with a minimalist Baja aesthetic.

For something more rustic and local, check out the Todos Santos Market Ella Bella on the main road, near the famous Hotel California. It’s part open-air market, part farmers market, where you’ll find everything from organic produce and local honey to textiles, hats, and herbal skincare made in the mountains.

Shops like Nomad Chic, Etnica, and Galería Ezra Katz bring an international vibe, blending global design with Baja roots. Many of these places are run by people who moved to Todos Santos for the same reasons you’re visiting — space, creativity, and a slower, more grounded rhythm of life.

The image depicts a colorful, vibrant clothing shop entrance with hats on display, surrounded by plants and adorned with a large green sign.

9. Take a yoga class

The small town of Todos Santos is also becoming increasingly popular as a yoga retreat destination, likely due to its soothing views and restorative energy.

However, you don’t need to participate in a full retreat, as yoga classes are available for occasional participants. You should contact the reception staff at your hotel for further information. For sure, they will know where to address you.

10. Have a day trip to Los Cabos

Among the easiest day trips from Todos Santos, Cabo San Lucas is only an hour away and completely worth the journey. I would suggest renting a car and exploring on your own, as the road is beautiful and very scenic, and there is no danger.

Once you arrive in the more touristy city, I would recommend taking a tour to visit the famous arch and then exploring one of the spectacular beaches, including Medano Beach and Santa Maria Beach, where it’s easier to swim compared to the rough sea of Todos Santos.

Then, if you get bored, you can get back in the car and reach San Jose del Cabo, much smaller and cozier than Cabo San Lucas, and walk around the pretty Colonial Town.

Here you can explore the historical center and enjoy a delicious lunch at the Restaurant Los Tamarindos, just outside the town.

A beautiful rustic-chic place overlooking an infinite field of organic cultivations. The food is, of course, made with local vegetables, and they also have gluten-free options.

11. Kayaking in the Sea of Cortez

This tour includes a transfer to Baja California Sur Capital La Paz, home to one of the most amazing beaches in Mexico, Balandra Bay, right on the Sea of Cortez, also called the world’s Aquarium for being one of the most biodiverse bodies of water in the world, with hundreds of fish species.

A person kayaks through lush mangrove forests under a cloudy sky, surrounded by calm water reflecting the greenery and atmosphere.

You can choose between two different tour options.

  • Snorkeling and coastal kayaking in the Sea of Cortez – with this option, you will kayak or paddle along the coast and past three rocky islands that are home to rookeries for blue herons and blue-footed boobies, as well as a family of sea lions. You will then snorkel in great spots accessible only by kayak and have a quick lunch. It is great for all levels, although some strength and endurance are required.
  • Kayaking in the mangroves and protected waters of Balandra Bay. This is a great trip for paddlers of all skill levels and doesn’t require as much strength as the first option

This tour includes round-trip transport from Todos Santos/La Paz, a bilingual guide (certified Wilderness First Responder), a picnic lunch, and all necessary equipment.

A person kayaking in a red kayak on a calm bay, surrounded by mountains and a marina filled with sailboats under a cloudy sky.

💡 Insider tip – If you have time, you can easily drive to Balandra Bay on your own and rent a kayak there. Alternatively, if you plan to stay a few days in La Paz, you can also find Kayaking tours there. Otherwise, this tour is a great option to see Balandra Bay, a real gem among the Mexican beaches.

12. Capture the Moment: Photography in Todos Santos

With its golden light, historic streets, and stunning natural landscapes, Todos Santos is a dream location for photography. It’s the kind of place where every corner feels like a postcard — whether you’re shooting the waves at Playa Punta Lobos, the warm tones of a desert sunset, or candid market moments downtown.

For travelers who want something more personal than snapshots on a phone, consider booking a local professional photographer. It’s a great way to capture the spirit of your trip — solo, as a couple, or with family and friends. You’ll get professionally edited images that make for perfect keepsakes or gifts.

What You Can Book:

  • A sunset photo shoot on the beach or cliffs
  • Candid portraits around historic downtown
  • A full-day photo tour to scenic locations like Cerritos Beach or La Poza Lagoon

Many photographers in town are expats or locals who know the light, angles, and hidden spots better than anyone. Some also offer photography workshops or editing sessions if you want to learn while you explore.

13. Go Whale Watching from Playa Punta Lobos

If you are traveling to Todos Santos from November through March, you will be able to enjoy the sight of majestic humpback whales from Playa Puntal Lobos, by the Hotel San Cristobal. It is not rare to see them from the beach while walking along the shore.

They come very close for you to enjoy their show, most of the time with their calves, if you go around February/March.

It’s a real treat if you can see them. Such amazing creatures!

The beach is public, but there are no facilities, except for a toilet by the car park. If you want to treat yourself to a high-end meal, you can head over to the San Cristobal Restaurant, but keep in mind it ain’t cheap! 😉

The best hotels in Todos Santos

Villas la Mar

At Villas La Mar, I stayed the second night—another luxury experience, this time with an amazing view of the ocean. The hotel resembles a large villa with small rooms overlooking the ocean.

There is no restaurant service, which makes it a little challenging because it’s a bit isolated from the restaurants and bars, and you would love to enjoy your breakfast from your room. Other than that, the place is stunning.

La Bohemia

I haven’t seen it unfortunately, but I have read the reviews and looked at the stunning picture, and this is the place I would choose should I go back to Baja.

They say about themselves:

“La Bohemia Baja is a hotel by travelers for travelers, and we have taken great care to create a cozy and upbeat environment where you can make the most of your time here in beautiful Baja California Sur.”  I would book it right away.

The Hotelito

This is where I stayed during my first night in Todos Santos. I really loved it. The rooms are nicely decorated with fine linen and beautiful art pieces. The patio is very convenient to chill in the evening after a day of exploring or after your morning rituals.

The staff is super nice and makes you feel at home. The hotel is also located just outside the historical center, close to a beautiful deserted beach, which gifted us with the most beautiful sunset!

Casa Tota

Hotel Casa Tota is a little surprise in the middle of the historical center, at an easy walk to shops, restaurants, and the beach.

I took a peek while passing by, as I was captivated by the contemporary design that blended harmoniously with the old red brick building, its colors, and design, offering functionality and comfort. 15 rooms.

The hotel also features the popular restaurant La Santana, renowned for its specialty cocktails and authentic Mexican cuisine.

Todos Santos Boutique Hotel

This hotel was once the home of a sugar baron before being restored and converted into a hotel, preserving the ambiance of a bygone era.  High ceilings, courtyard gardens, and antique furniture make you feel like you are in another era.

The only hacienda hotel in the area. It is situated in the heart of the historical center where it belongs, perfectly blending with the other Redstone buildings and pebbled roads. It’s worth a visit even if you are not staying there.

San Cristobal Hotel

Named after San Christopher, the patron saint of travelers, this beautifully decorated property is becoming an icon in Todos Santos.

It appears that this photogenic boutique property has helped Todos Santos rank in The New York Times’ top 50 travel destinations.

And with its sophisticated decorations, like the bright blankets, terra-cotta-potted cacti, and the bamboo pulls in the guest room curtains, to name a few, it certainly makes it a mecca for the style-conscious traveler.

Restaurants in Todos Santos

The restaurant in Todos Santos offers not only abundant food but also of great quality. The rich soil makes it a great place for cultivation, and all the top restaurants draw from the numerous local organic farms in the surrounding area. Here is my top choice.

📍 Santoro

I have had lunch at Santoro twice and loved it. The boho decor of their rooftop terrace creates a chic ambiance where to enjoy delicious meals. I had the tacos and the burritos, and they were out of this world. The upscale restaurant is a bit over-average-expensive but totally worth it.

📍 Hierbabuena

There is one restaurant in particular that I loved, and it was the first that I tried. Hierbabuena is actually the name of a plant used to make mint tea. The restaurant, situated in a beautiful garden, offers a vast menu featuring a variety of specialties meticulously prepared with vegetables from their own farm.

📍Michaels at the Gallery

The other one I tried, suggested by the Hotel I was staying at, was Michaels at the Gallery – it’s Asian fusion cuisine, within the premises of an Art Gallery. The fun part is that the eccentric artist is the chef and the owner of the gallery/restaurant. The food was great and I believe one of the priciest restaurants in town.

📍Cafe’ La Esquina

It’s a quite iconic place situated in a beautiful garden with space for children to play while their parents can sip their coffee or fresh juices in tranquility. They have vegan and vegetarian options as well.

Other quite popular restaurants which I haven’t had the time to try are:

📍Cafe’ Santa Fe

An upscale Italian restaurant that is considered one of the best in town.  It’s located in a restored 1850s building in downtown Todos Santos.

📍Los Adobes

Los Adobes has built an impeccable reputation through the years, both from locals and tourists. They focus on seafood, although their menu varies and includes organic products.

Other restaurants that have heard  good things about are:

  • Garden restaurant
  • Ristorante tre galline

Enjoy your meal!

If you have other restaurants in mind that are worth mentioning, please do let me know. I would really appreciate it.

Yoga retreats in Todos Santos

Todos Santos is also popular for hosting different yoga retreats. It might be a good opportunity for a rejuvenating week far from the daily routine to boost your energy and get back to your life brand new.

Here I am including a list of yoga retreats in the area. I am very surprised that there are so many in such a small place.

However, if I think about the incredible energy I have found in just a couple of days there, together with the soothing views, I can understand why Todos Santos inspires the growth of such places.

Please note that I haven’t tried or seen these places, so I cannot offer a personal suggestion. I am just offering a list of places for the sake of information.

🚗 Getting to Todos Santos

Reaching Todos Santos is easy, especially if you’re exploring Baja California Sur by road. The journey itself offers stunning coastal and desert views that set the tone for your time in this laid-back town.

From Cabo San Lucas

The most common route runs from Cabo San Lucas to Todos Santos, covering about 46 miles (74 km) via Highway 19. The drive takes just over an hour and follows a scenic stretch of coastline. It’s smooth, well-paved, and safe — just watch out for livestock along the road in rural areas.

From San José del Cabo International Airport (SJD)

Flying into SJD Airport? It’s about a 90-minute drive to Todos Santos. Renting a car at the airport is your best bet if you want to explore beaches, remote hikes, and towns along the coast. We recommend booking in advance through Discover Cars — they compare top rental brands and offer great deals with transparent pricing.

You’ll also find shuttles, taxis, and bus options from Cabo, but having your own car gives you the freedom to take spontaneous detours (and there will be many).

A long desert road stretches into the horizon, flanked by cacti and sparse vegetation under a clear blue sky.

From La Paz

Coming from La Paz to Todos Santos takes roughly 1.5 hours. It’s a peaceful drive through Baja’s inland desert landscape, and just like the Cabo route, the roads are in good condition.

Is It Safe to Drive to Todos Santos?

Yes — the drive is safe and straightforward, with clear signage and regular services along the way. Try to drive during daylight, especially if you’re new to the region, as rural roads aren’t always lit at night.

Things to do in Todos Santos: Final thoughts

As you could see, there are not so many things to do right in Todos Santos as much as in the nearby Los Cabos or La Paz.

However, Todos Santos makes a great base where to relax and enjoy the beautiful energy of the place, hang out in the local cafes, take some yoga classes, and watch spectacular sunsets from the beach.

Todos Santos is only 1-hour drive from La Paz and from Los Cabos.
