What’s the Weather Like in Mexico in September? (+ Tips By a Local)
Thinking about traveling to Mexico and unsure about deciding whether the weather in Mexico in September is good for traveling? Don’t worry because I’ve got you covered.
I have lived in Mexico since 2010, and I have traveled all around the country multiple times.
In this short guide, I’ll tell you all about what the weather is like during September in Mexico’s most popular travel destinations, along with the things to do there during the month.
Without further ado, let’s get into it!

Is September a Good Time to Visit Mexico?
September is certainly not the favorite season for tourists to travel to Mexico if you are heading to the beach, but it has its advantages. While it is still the rainy season, and there are chances of tropical storms, it’s hot and humid along the coastlines, especially the Riviera Maya and Cancun.
However, this doesn’t mean that it rains every day. Sometimes, it’s just a passing shower. If you want to visit the cities of central Mexico, it can be an ideal time to go, for the lower temperature and low chance of rain. (see the images below)
For the beach destinations, there is a bright side to the bad weather. Since it’s not a popular time for most travelers, the deals you can get on hotels and travel make it well worth it for the traveler who’s on a budget or who simply prefers traveling with fewer people around. In addition, the post-rainy season flora is bound to leave you in awe of the variety Mexico has to offer in terms of natural beauty.
Ultimately, for these reasons, it boils down to a matter of personal preference and you shouldn’t be disconcerted about the prospect just because it’s an off-peak season.

Average temperature in Mexico in September
I should preface this by saying, the temperatures vary quite a bit depending on where in Mexico you are, and I’ll tell you about it in detail in the following sections. For example, the coastal regions can be considerably hotter than the average.
However, in general you can expect the temperature to range from around 20°C (68°F) to 28°C (82°F). The sky can range from overcast to perfectly clear in September, depending on how the rainy season is going.

Average rainfall in Mexico in September
On average, September is considered to be the rainiest month of the year (but this depends on where you are in Mexico). You can expect it to be around 270mm across ten rainy days. However, during most of the day, it’ll be very sunny with rain showers being short and intense.
You should keep in mind that this is just the average, and it can vary quite a bit for every September. For example, in September 2011, there was a tropical storm but in September 2010 it rained well below average. Keep a close eye on weather forecasts when you’re planning your trip.

Is September hurricane season in Mexico?
September falls in the heart of the hurricane season in Mexico, which starts in July and ends in November. September and October are the two most active months for hurricanes.
So, yeah, you should keep that in mind if you are planning a beach trip to Mexico.
The threat of hurricanes is very much a possibility, but if the forecast is clear for where in Mexico you’re specifically going to, you should be good to go.

Yes, September falls at the very tail end of the rainy season but it’s also the rainiest season in most places in Mexico. It will of course depend on where you’re going to be in Mexico, since the coastal regions experience a higher amount of rain.
Why is Mexico cheaper in September?
Since September is part of the rainy season, a lot of the coastal areas experience higher levels of humidity, heat and rainfall. This is not to most tourists’ taste, but because of this Mexico is a lot cheaper to travel to in the rainy season and there is a lot less traffic around. If you’re willing to compromise a bit on weather, this can be an excellent opportunity to travel on a budget.
What month is best in Mexico?
Depending on your preference, the winter months (December-April) are the peak season and also provide the optimal temperatures.
However, if weather isn’t much of an issue for you, the rainy season (July-December) offers many places in Mexico that are still quite temperate to visit for lower prices and there will also be less traffic, if that’s your preference.

Is it better to go to Mexico in September or October?
There isn’t going to be much of a difference since they’re both part of the rainy season, but towards the end of October the weather does shift to being cooler and less humid, especially in areas that are further inland.
Both October and September are part of the hurricane season, so that factor really depends on the weather predictions. It boils down to a matter of preference: if you prefer the weather a little cooler, while still traveling on a budget, October might be the better time to visit. However, if you’re only free for September, there isn’t a drastic difference between the two options.
Is Mexico very hot in September?
The average high temperature in Mexico is 28°C, but this can be a lot higher for specific areas, especially ones along the coast. For example, in La Paz, temperatures can go up to 38°C during the day. There are also areas like Puebla, which is further inland, where the daily high temperature is around 23°C.
To generalize it for the entirety of Mexico would be unfair due to the high degree of variation, but you can choose places to visit and judge them specifically.
